This Industrial warehouse style building in Richmond Victoria offered a sound structure to work with, though prior to its refurbishment designed by Design Empathy it did not meet the aesthetic standards of its updated purpose. Upon the successful relocation of vehicle parking provisions the entire ground level area of the building could be utilized. A copper panel clad portal was used to announce the relocated formal entry and to provide an asymmetric façade element which in form references Denton Corker Marshall architects iconic Melbourne Adelphi Hotel.
Prior to refurbishment this warehouse offered little interface with the street. During refurbishment level one window apertures were retained and used as references for new ground floor windows. New ground floor window sills were positioned at internal waist height rather than floor level in the interest of security. Interaction with the street was vastly improved via relatively large transparent solar treated windows. The original face brick cladding of the structure was retained wherever possible to express the original fabric of the building.
